Meta Unveils Powerful AI Models to Directly Compete with OpenAI
Meta (META) has launched two new AI models, Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, marking a significant push in its AI efforts. The company’s stock rose about 4% in afternoon trading following the announcement.
Muse Wonder will power Meta’s Muse personal AI agent, which is set to debut with subscribers. Muse Wonder Full, a more powerful variant, is available to subscribers of Meta’s AI coding tool, Muse Code.
The launch positions Meta directly against OpenAI and Anthropic. Mark Zuckerberg has invested billions of dollars and hired top researchers over the past year to close the gap with these competitors.
In a blog post, Meta disclosed that it had been reevaluating its AI initiatives for the past 14 months. The company claims to have rebuilt its foundations and is now pushing the boundaries of AI technology.
Meta also rolled out its Muse agent last month, which can access other apps, send emails, and make payments. Reuters notes that this success could translate into new subscription revenue for Meta.
The stock rally reflects investor confidence in Meta’s progress on its significant AI investment. AI spending is substantial, and the market is eager to see evidence that it will yield returns.
During its July earnings call, Meta reported Q2 revenue of $60.8 billion, up 28%, and projected Q3 revenue of $61 billion to $64 billion. The company now expects 2026 capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion, highlighting the scale of its AI initiatives.
Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta plans to sell new AI products to both businesses and consumers, including personal agents and model APIs. The company is also preparing a new Meta One offering, which will likely incorporate these models and enable subscriptions.
However, Susan Li warned of potential legal risks. She noted that youth related trials this year could result in material losses, adding a layer of uncertainty.
Despite the mixed picture, better AI models provide Meta with a clearer path to new revenue streams. However, high costs and unproven payoffs are significant challenges. The 4% jump in Meta’s stock today underscores investor enthusiasm, though it remains to be seen if this launch will definitively settle the debate over the stock’s future.
