In a development that marks a significant shift for Anthropic, the artificial intelligence firm behind Claude, the company has struck a content and data licensing deal with the Associated Press (AP) just before the midterm elections. This agreement, as reported by two sources familiar with the matter, is the first such deal that Anthropic has entered into with a digital news publisher.
Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment, and the AP did not provide a comment on the record. The financial specifics of the arrangement, including its timeframe and the exact amount paid by Anthropic, remain undisclosed. However, this deal signifies a strategic evolution for Anthropic, which previously had not engaged in content licensing deals with major news publishers.
Prior to this agreement, Anthropic had relied on scraping and using publisher content under the belief that it was legally permissible under the concept of fair use. This stance had led to a reluctance to form licensing partnerships with major news organizations. In fact, in August, I explored the situation in an article, finding that industry executives believed Anthropic genuinely believed its practices were legally defensible.
The reluctance to engage in content licensing discussions had sparked curiosity within the industry. However, the new deal with the AP highlights Anthropic’s recognition that access to up to date, credible information is crucial for its AI platform. Without such access, Anthropic would struggle to provide real time, accurate information, especially during critical events such as election cycles.
The AP’s willingness to enter into such a licensing agreement is notable. The organization, which generates a significant portion of its revenue through licensing and wire deals, is well positioned to offer high quality, timely content. Its non partisan stance further enhances its appeal as a partner for Anthropic.
While this deal is a significant step, it does not necessarily indicate a permanent change in Anthropic’s licensing strategy. The company may use the data from this experiment to inform future decisions. However, the deal underscores the importance of credible, real time information for AI platforms like Claude.
If Anthropic wishes to establish itself as a dominant player in the AI ecosystem, it will likely need to engage more deeply with premium publishers. This move with the AP is a strong indicator of the value such partnerships can bring.
