AI and enterprise technology company Anthropic recently posted a job listing for a sales role dedicated to Meta, only to delete it shortly after. The posting drew attention due to the complex business relationship between the two companies, with Meta both a key customer and a competitor.
According to Business Insider on September 9, Anthropic’s careers page featured a job posting titled “Mega Account Executive, Meta,” which was later removed. The role was described as focusing on winning new business and expanding revenue with strategic digital native accounts, with a salary range of $380,000 to $450,000. The title explicitly named Meta, making the role unusual for Anthropic, which typically focuses on specific regions or industries in its other sales job postings.
Anthropic deleted the posting after Business Insider inquired about it. Neither company issued a statement on the matter.
The relationship between Anthropic and Meta is complex, given that Meta is both a major customer and a competitor. Meta uses Anthropic’s AI services extensively, while also competing by developing its own AI models and products. In particular, Anthropic’s AI coding tool, Claude Code, has gained significant traction in Silicon Valley, and its use at Meta has reportedly increased. Meanwhile, Meta continues to enhance its in house AI capabilities, aiming to reduce dependence on external AI tools.
The posting is seen as an indication of Anthropic’s intent to expand and maintain long term business with Meta, beyond just adding sales staff. For Anthropic, securing stable revenue from large customers like Meta is crucial for growth and corporate value, especially as the company prepares for an initial public offering (IPO).
Conversely, Meta’s relationship with Anthropic could shift if it improves its in house AI models and reduces its reliance on external tools. As a customer, Meta needs to continue using Anthropic’s services, while as a competitor, it aims to grow its own AI ecosystem.
Ultimately, the evolving relationship between Anthropic and Meta reflects the current structure of the AI industry, where companies compete while also needing each other. How long Anthropic can retain and expand its revenue from a mega customer like Meta, and how far Meta can reduce reliance on external AI services, are key factors shaping their future ties.
