Meta has deployed advanced artificial intelligence systems and enhanced security protocols across Facebook and Instagram to disrupt child sexual exploitation networks, targeting covert advertising tactics used by bad actors to route users to illicit material off platform. According to reports, in the first half of 2026, Meta acted on 33.2 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content globally, with over 97% of this content being proactively detected. In India, Meta removed more than 5.3 million items, with proactive detection rates exceeding 98%.
To combat these sophisticated tactics, Meta has integrated Large Language Model (LLMs) classifiers to analyze destination URLs, in addition to examining surface level creative assets. This approach helps identify and block harmful content more effectively. The company has also deployed autonomous red teaming AI agents to simulate threat vectors, detect systemic vulnerabilities, and improve recidivism tracking, ensuring that removed offenders cannot re-register under new accounts.
These automated safeguards operate alongside Meta’s established PhotoDNA hashing technology and its contributions to the Tech Coalition’s Lantern database, which helps identify and remove known bad actors and content.
The technical defenses complement Meta’s network level investigations led by specialized child safety teams and former law enforcement personnel. Meta’s actions extend beyond blocking offending links and disabling associated accounts. The company has expanded direct regulatory reporting in India, building on its existing integration with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Now, Meta submits child safety cases directly to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre’s (I4C) National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which accelerates local law enforcement intervention.
The deployment of these advanced AI tools and security protocols marks a significant step in Meta’s ongoing efforts to protect users and combat child exploitation. By integrating multiple layers of protection and leveraging AI, the company aims to stay one step ahead of bad actors and provide a safer platform for its users.
